Islamabad: Educationists called on universities to embrace modern technologies while ensuring the responsible, ethical and effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), safeguarding academic integrity and educational values. The call came at a Vice Chancellors’ Roundtable at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), part of the 29th Sustainable Development Conference organized by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI).
Participants said AI can improve teaching, research and administration, and raise research productivity and students’ academic capabilities. They stressed that ethics, transparency, accountability and academic integrity must remain central. AI should support teachers and students, not replace human thinking and creativity, and over-reliance could undermine independent thinking. Universities, they said, need clear policies and guidelines.
The speakers also urged teacher training, curriculum revision, better research facilities and stronger digital skills, along with critical thinking and ethical awareness among students.
AIOU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood said AI is helping make distance education more effective, but responsible use is essential so that technology does not compromise academic integrity or creative thinking.
Participants included SDPI’s Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri, BNU’s Dr. Moeed Yusuf, GIKI’s Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmad Khalid, FJWU’s Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza and University of Sindh’s Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Marri. Dr. Fariha Armughan moderated.
