Students and Solidarity Groups Gather at Cuban Embassy in Islamabad

News Desk

ISLAMABAD : The Federation of Progressive Students held a solidarity event at the Embassy of Cuba to commemorate Ernesto “Che” Guevara and to reject the US blockade of Cuba.

The event brought together students and academics from other sectors, along with members of solidarity groups including the Pakistan Cuba Social Forum, the Awami Workers’ Party and the Pakistani Cuban Doctors Association (PCDA), which represents Pakistani doctors who graduated in Cuba.

Speakers from each of these groups spoke about Che’s commitment and struggle alongside the dispossessed, his internationalist legacy, his enduring friendship with Fidel Castro and his loyalty to the leader of the Cuban Revolution. They also recalled his denunciation, in all forums, of the hegemonic policies of imperialism.

The speakers also recalled Cuba’s solidarity with Pakistan after the devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005, when thousands of Cuban health specialists arrived to save lives.

A particularly significant moment was the denunciation of the blockade on Cuba, including the energy blockade and permanent sanctions imposed by the US government. The demand from the gathering was unanimous: “Cuba is not a threat, the blockade is.”
