New York : The Washington-based World Kashmir Awareness Forum (WKAF) ran digital advertising trucks through Times Square, the area near UN headquarters, Rockefeller Center and other landmarks to mark October 27, which Kashmiris observe as a day of occupation. Screens displayed messages on self-determination, UN resolutions, land rights and the release of political prisoners.
Speakers said the day marks the 1947 entry of Indian troops into Jammu and Kashmir, and called for renewed UN and international engagement. Dr. Imtiaz Khan cited concerns over the 2019 revocation of the region’s special status and changes to domicile and land rules. Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai urged independent investigations into alleged rights abuses, while acknowledging India presents its security measures as counterterrorism. He said a lasting settlement requires dialogue rather than imposing one side’s narrative.
Organizer Sardar Taj Khan argued Kashmir should not be treated solely as an India-Pakistan issue and that Kashmiris must participate in decisions. Other speakers stressed regional stability, given both countries are nuclear-armed.
The Forum called for a comprehensive peace process, confidence-building measures and human rights protection.
