ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFS&R) and Denmark-based International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS) have signed an MoU to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Pakistan’s poultry and livestock sectors.

Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain attended the virtual ceremony on October 28, along with senior officials and researchers.

Under the MoU, ICARS will fund a three-year project worth USD 540,855, led by the University of Agriculture Faisalabad in collaboration with Poultry Research Institute Rawalpindi.

Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain said AMR is a serious threat to human, animal health and food security, stressing responsible antibiotic use and practical, evidence-based solutions under the One Health approach. He appreciated ICARS, Denmark, and the research team led by Dr. Mashkoor Mohsin Gillani.

ICARS Executive Director Helle Engslund Krarup said the partnership will generate evidence on antibiotic alternatives.

Senior Advisor Rodolphe Mader said the project will test organic acids as antibiotic alternative on 30 poultry farms – 15 intervention and 15 control – aiming to cut antimicrobial use by at least 20% without affecting productivity, while assessing health, performance and economic feasibility.
