Swabi University Students Urged to Back Mandatory Warning Labels on Unhealthy Foods

News Desk

Swabi  :The Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) held an awareness session at the University of Swabi on 7 November 2026, aiming to rally young people behind mandatory Front-of-Pack Warning Labels (FOPWLs) on ultra-processed foods.

PANAH General Secretary Sana Ullah Ghumman said non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease cause roughly 60% of deaths in Pakistan. He linked the crisis to heavy consumption of ultra-processed products high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, worsened by aggressive marketing. Citing international experience, he argued that clear warning labels help consumers make informed choices and urged students to become advocates for the policy.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nasim Ullah Qureshi praised the initiative, encouraged healthier lifestyles and natural food choices, and said young people can drive social change. ORIC Director Dr. Ruidar Ali Shah welcomed the delegation and expressed interest in deeper collaboration with PANAH.

PANAH reaffirmed its commitment to engaging universities nationwide, stressing that mandatory labels protect consumers’ right to know and safeguard future generations.
